Fire tower location: Mount Wilcox, Beartown State Forest, Monterey,
Berkshire County, MA
The fire tower and land are owned by DCR. The summit of Mount Wilcox has
one fire tower and two additional telecommunications towers. Each of the
three towers is flanked by an equipment shelter and surrounded by a
chain-link fence. Antennas are mounted on all three towers and on the
fire tower equipment shelter. There are also two telephone poles with
antennas. Power lines criss-cross the area.
Years ago, the Appalachian Trail traversed the summit, but was
eventually moved, apparently because of the visual blight of the towers.
As of fiscal year 2000, five public-agency leases were on the summit,
and private leases were projected for fiscal year 2001, with annual
lease revenue of $20,000.
